Setting up and using ClockworkMod (CWM)

Warning WARNING: I have not tested these instructions; you are on your own.

(Instructions are adapted from this XDA thread)

  1. Download a CWM image from this XDA thread.
  2. Flash the downloaded image to an SD card. Once done, extend the partition using whatever software.
  3. Open a file manager. At the root of the SD card, create a folder called "clockworkmod", and within it, a folder called "backup". This is used to create a backup and flash images.

Flashing an image

  1. Download an image, potentially one from the above thread.
  2. Copy the folder from the .zip to the "downloads/clockworkmod" folder on the CWM SD card.
  3. Eject the SD card from your computer.
  4. Make sure your battery is charged. The XDA thread recommends at least 60%.
  5. Turn off the device, insert the SD card, and turn it back on.
  6. To navigate CWM:
    • Upper-left is previous menu
    • Upper-right is up
    • Lower-right is down
    • "n" button is select
  7. Select "backup/restore", then "backup". When the device is done backing up, you will be returned to the main menu.
  8. Select "wipe data/factory reset", then confirm. If at any point CWM freezes, repeatedly press and hold the power button.
  9. Select "advanced", then "wipe dalvik cache", then confirm.
  10. Select "backup/restore", then "restore", then the name of the folder that you copied over, then confirm.
  11. Once done, remove the CWM card and select "reboot system now".
  12. Follow any other instructions described when downloading the image.
