From postmarketOS Wiki

As Farooq communicated with Kobo through Email, they welcome custom OS with the user's full responsibility. Kobo also releases kernel source code for their devices even before a user asks for them.

Kobo ebook readers usually come with very low-end armv7 processors from NXP. The processors have got good support in mainline. To mainline these devices, little work is needed comparing to other tablets as a majority of the hardware already has got support in mainline.
