Notes on using postmarketOS on my Samsung tablet.

What I do on it:

  • Light web browsing
  • Doing quick stuff when I don't have access to my computer (it's regular linux after all!)

I run postmarketOS edge on it, the catacomb(WIP packaging) suite installed. Catacomb the wayland compositor does not support the stylus, but I can still use the other mobile-friendly utils from it and it works just fine in Sxmo and Phosh. :)

I do note taking on the similar Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (samsung-p4note) now because of its bigger screen.

S-Pen

I have a few kernel changes to get the S-Pen recognized under mainline. It is picked up by Xournal++ and sway, and works great overall. Can't say I had any issues.

I want to upstream these changes so that I don't have to keep them to myself :)

Web browsing

UPDATE: Chromium seemingly dropped gles2 support :(

I unfortunately use Chromium for web browsing, not because I don't like Firefox-based browsers, but because these don't perform very well on this tablet, which only supports up to OpenGL ES 2.0 (dropped by Firefox back in 2021). That said, Chromium is not as snappy as I would've liked either, it's definitely faster than Firefox but still slower than any web browser I've tried under Android 7.1 on that same hardware.

Such a web browser also needs to support the 'modern' stuff like JavaScript, because I do sometimes visit JS-heavy websites on it.

I am considering Kumo from the catacomb suite also, but I have not packaged it yet in postmarketOS/Alpine, and its flatpak version does not currently have an armv7 build.
