How to do Code Of Conduct Enforcement
The CoC Enforcement is done by two teams, the Chat Moderators and the CoC Team.
Our Code Of Conduct describes the community standards and the rules that need to be followed for CoC enforcement, starting at notably a private written warning if somebody is violating the Code Of Conduct (why?).
An exception where the rules from the CoC do not need to be followed is if somebody joins a channel and directly starts insulting people with slurs, posting spam / advertising links, etc. or has a clearly offensive username. In that case the person can just directly be kicked or banned with a meaningful reason such as "posting spam".
Chat Moderators
Chat moderation is done in a private Robot control
room. We use this
channel for chat moderation discussion and for controlling the bot that can kick
and ban people.
1. Correction:
- Write a warning to the user as private message. (If the user does not accept private messages, then we do a public warning instead.)
- Write a note in
Robot control
that you did that. Also note if a public warning had to be done instead.
2. Warning:
- Write another warning to the user, either as private message or as message in the channel (your choice).
- Write a note in
Robot control
that you did that.
3. Temporary Ban:
- Use the bot to kick the user (replace the username; the message can be adjusted, note that it is visible as kick reason in the channel and for the user):
!kick username Code Of Conduct violation
4. Permanent Ban:
- Use the bot to ban the user:
!ban username Recurring CoC violations
- If the user comes back, they may be banned again.
- Prefix the user with
host:
to also ban their host if on IRC (only if they're ban evading) - If the user wants to have the ban withdrawn, they can send a mail to help@postmarketos.org explaining themselves and the CoC Team can consider it.
Reporting
Reporting is done in a #postmarketos-modreq
channel available on IRC and Matrix (but not bridged together).
The IRC channel is set up as follows:
+mz
: Redirect all messages in the channel to channel ops only. This means regular users cannot see each other's messages.+s
: Set the channel as secret. This means the channel will not be shown in OFTC's channel list.- Entry message set to remind people to email help@postmarketos.org for ban appeals, and to leave the channel once their request has been handled.
And the Matrix channel is set up as follows:
- History set to be aggressive: only members since they joined can read history
- End-to-end encrypted
- Pinned message set to remind people to email help@postmarketos.org for ban appeals, and to leave the channel once their request has been handled.
CoC Team
The CoC team responsible for answering help@postmarketos.org mails:
- When we get a message unrelated to the CoC, we ignore it (as it says on the CoC page). We can make exceptions to this if it makes sense, but in general people should not assume that they can use this mail address to ask random questions about postmarketOS.
- When a message related to the CoC comes in:
- we discuss it in the separate, private CoC room
- we possibly do CoC enforcement actions
- we propose a mail to send back
- after review we send it out
- repeat until it is resolved
